Mother Nature is a Black Woman

My independent project, Mother Nature is a Black Woman is a conversation shared with two groups of Black women in the environmental field. This work is part of the inaugural Afrofuturism Collective, convened by American Bird Conservancy in partnership with Re:wild, which is supporting creative leaders who are imagining how the African diaspora’s stories, lifeways, and technologies can re-envision the conservation field. My contribution, Mother Nature Is a Black Woman, explores how Black women and gender-expansive folks across the diaspora understand, embody, and enact stewardship with the natural world—melding cultural, spiritual, ecological, and symbolic dimensions.

This project was born out of a deep desire to explore the intersections of culture, environment, and identity, and to center the voices of brilliant Black women.
